Access rules for the forested areas in Var
A prefectorial ordinance (arrêté préfectoral du 27 juin 2016) regulates access to the forested areas and driving/parking on certain bordering roads.
Excerpts from article 3 regarding access to the forested areas :
From June 15st to September 30th the préfecture releases for each day a map showing the level of fire risk for the forested areas in the Var. This map depends on Meteo France’s weather forecast and is updated daily at 7 pm. It is available on the Var department of Agriculture and Forestry website (http://ddaf.cdig-83.org).
Access to the forested areas is regulated as follows :
Yellow zones (moderate level of fire risk) :
Caution is required.
Orange zones (high level of fire risk) :
It is recommended to refrain from going into the forested areas.
Red zones (very high level of fire risk) :
It is strongly recommended to refrain from going into the forested areas.
It is prohibited to drive on any of the roads listed in the annex to the prefectorial ordinance that are marked with the following sign :
Black zones (extremely high level of fire risk) :
It is prohibited to drive on any of the ways listed in the annex to the prefectorial order that are marked with the following sign :
Access by foot (walkers, hikers…) is prohibited in all the woods, forests, scrublands, afforestations or plantations in the following nine massifs (covering the whole Var) : Centre-Var, Estérel, Haut-Var, Iles d’Hyères, Maures Nord, Maures Sud, Préalpes, Sainte Baume Nord, Sainte Baume Sud.
The risks in the massif de l’Estérel also apply to the western massifs of the Alpes-Maritimes.
